Baths of Smokovo

A few words about the Baths of Smokovo

Combine your gastronomic experience at Drosostalia Restaurant with a stroll to the Smokovo Thermal Baths. During winter, the Smokovo Baths are open every Friday from 11 am to 7 pm, and on weekends from 9 am to 7 pm. The Smokovo Baths are located at the 35th kilometer of the Karditsa – Rentina axis, at an altitude of 450 meters. Nestled in a lush valley, they are surrounded by oak and shady plane trees. Each bathing season, they are bustling with life and host a variety of activities. Belonging to the Municipal District of Loutra, they have been operating as a community enterprise since 1982. Access by car is quite easy, and during the bathing season, daily routes are operated by the KTEL Karditsa. To cater to bathers and visitors, there are fully renovated hotels of categories B, C, and D, operated by the Smokovo Municipal Enterprise (Agrafa, Thessaly, Meteora, Pindos, Tembi), as well as guesthouses (Haido, Athena, Kalypso). The capacity of the infrastructure reaches approximately 250 rooms. It is a well-organized spa town where the beauty of nature, combined with the therapeutic properties of the waters and the constantly improving services offered in all areas, provide visitors not only healing but also relaxation and entertainment. The official bathing season lasts from June 1st to mid-October. From July 20th to September 20th, the attendance reaches saturation points. With a history spanning centuries and a monastic tradition, the Smokovo Baths are today one of the most famous thermal tourism centers in Greece.

Today

The Smokovo Baths are located in a lush valley, at an altitude of 450 meters, and are 6 kilometers away from the village of Smokovos (Loutrapigi). The thermal waters gush from five sources at a natural temperature of 37 to 40.2 degrees Celsius and flow into the hydrotherapy center. They have a sulfur-alkaline composition, a slight hydrogen sulfide smell, and are considered among the best in Greece. Several hotels are built very close to the hydrotherapy center, all of which have views of the central square. After their recent modernization, they are all in excellent condition and are classified into various categories to cater to customers of all requirements and financial capabilities. The Hydrotherapy Center is one of the most modern, and since June 2009, its new SPA complex has been in operation, which, in combination with the beneficial and therapeutic properties of the thermal springs, offers guests relaxation and well-being. The new complex features a pool, a fully equipped gym, two traditional and two thermic saunas, two steam rooms, and two relaxation massage rooms. There are also individual inhalation rooms, nasal douche rooms, and individual baths that, with the press of a button, turn into hydro-massage (jacuzzi) tubs. During their operation, specialized staff is hired for all positions, and a doctor is permanently stationed in the spa town.

Therapeutic Properties

The thermal waters of the springs are recommended for respiratory diseases, rheumatic diseases, arthritis, neuralgia, myalgia, dermatological conditions, and gynecological disorders. Treatment with thermal water has been known in our country since ancient times, not only empirically but also scientifically, a fact that proves how much the ancient Greeks were involved with thermal waters. The ancient Greeks were well aware of some properties of the thermal baths, which they used not only for therapeutic reasons but also to maintain good physical condition. Herodotus (484-410) is one such example who established the duration of thermal therapy at 21 days. Today, medical tourism is an alternative form of tourism aimed at taking breaks to maintain physical and mental health. In this perspective, the Smokovo baths are also included.
